Hiring bonus is paid out in scheduled payments upon completion of training/probationary period.

$2000 hiring incentive applies to all incoming bus operator, train operator and mechanic positions with the following exception:

Current RTD third party contractors not eligible. Candidate must not have worked for third party contractor for at least 12 months to be eligible for signing bonus.

Payment schedule:
  • $500 upon completion of 7-week training for bus drivers or 90 day probationary period for mechanics

Steps to become an RTD Bus Driver or train operator

Step 1: Obtain a current Motor Vehicle Record

Include a current Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) issued within 30 days of your application date. MVRs can be purchased at all Department of Motor Vehicles in the state where your driver's license was issued. Your MVR must show that you have had a valid driver's license for at least two years.

Step 2: Submit your application and Motor Vehicle Record

Step 3: Interview, Testing and Job Offer

If your skills meet our qualifications, we’ll call you to schedule an interview which lasts about one hour at the RTD Administrative Offices. Based on the results, you may receive a job offer contingent on passing the following tests, done at no cost to you. You must pass the following before you can move on to the next step.

  • Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam
  • Drug screening
  • Human performance evaluation (HPE) to determine if you are physically capable of performing the job (lifting, sitting in a confined space, etc.)
  • Criminal background check
  • Employment verification

Step 4: Obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class BP2 Permit

Before orientation and training, you must have a CDL Class BP2 permit which allows you to drive vehicles that have air brakes and carry more than 15 passengers. To get this permit, you must take a written test at any full-service Colorado DMV facility. You can take the test as many times as you like. To help you study, RTD will provide a free copy of the Colorado CDL Manual.

Step 5: Orientation and Training

Once you have the CDL BP2 permit, you will be scheduled for orientation and six (6) weeks of paid training at RTD. On the second week of training, you will take a written and road test to obtain your Class BP2 license. You will be given three chances to pass the test. Once you pass both tests, you will receive a certificate to take to the DMV for a photo license.
